Department
———– Serving Himachal Pradesh Since 1955
The Department of Economics and Statistics in Himachal Pradesh has been functioning since 1955–56. The Directorate of Economics & Statistics came into being with the objective to advise the state government on economic and statistical matters for formulation of policies and plans.
The mandate of the department is to assess the economic development of the state through the estimation of State Domestic Product, presentation of economic scenario of the state through fact and figures, census and surveys & studies.
The main functions of the Department are to build form and broad data bank for the Pradesh so as to serve as a useful data base for all plan and policy formulations, bring out the estimates of GSDP/State Income and economic growth, conduct various studies and surveys and coordinate various statistical activities of different departments in the state.

01 Functions of the Department
The subject allotted to this department according to “The Business of the Government (Allocation) Rules 1971” are as below:
Estimation and analysis of Gross State Domestic Product and Net Product to assess overall economic performance.
Compilation and analysis of government revenue, expenditure, and financial data to support effective fiscal planning.
Conducting surveys to collect data on living conditions, employment, income, and social development indicators.
Collection and evaluation of rural data to monitor development programmes and improve village-level planning.
Monitoring and analyzing price trends of essential commodities to track inflation and market conditions.
Assessing government schemes and development programmes to measure effectiveness and policy outcomes.
Systematic classification and analysis of state and local body budgets for transparency and financial management.
Maintaining comprehensive records and statistical details of government employees across Himachal Pradesh departments.
Collection and analysis of employment, unemployment, wages, and workforce participation data.
suring uniform standards and coordination in statistical activities across various government departments.
Preparation and publication of reliable official statistical reports for policy formulation and administrative decisions.
Providing professional training to enhance statistical skills and capacity of government officials and staff.
Managing financial allocations, budget records, and accounts related to departmental operations.
